Breastfeeding is one of the best decisions I have ever made but it also the most challenging. Breastfeeding is not something you get to practice before you start your journey. And it is overwhelming because you know how important it is to get your baby fed.

And let me stop to say if you stumble across this post and are struggling with breastfeeding then find a local lactation consultant to help you out! Your OBYGN doctor should be able to refer you to someone or the hospital you had your child at.

But with that said there are things you will want to help your breastfeeding journey go smoother. Here I will give you a list of things that I used and needed on my breastfeeding journey and why it was useful for me.

This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience (which means if you make a purchase after clicking a link I will earn a small commission but it won’t cost you a penny more)! Check out my full disclosure here.

Breast pump

Now I am a stay-at-home mom and did not have to pump around the clock but it is nice to have a stash of milk for emergencies or whenever you’re away from your babe. I love the Medela brand. It is the only brand I have used and I think it works great! A lot of insurances will pay for a breast pump for you. Every insurance varies and also the breast pump options vary. But I would check it out.

Milk freezer bags

After you pump your milk you will want to properly store and freeze your milk. I’ve used both the Medela brand and also Lansinoh brand.

I never used these (because it was too late) but I would definitely look into the Kiinde Twist set – which has the bags you pump your milk into then you can insert them right into the bottle. Saves so much time and I honestly wish I would have known about them sooner.

Breastfeeding Reminder Clips

When you’re breastfeeding you switch boobs every feed and when you’re tired it can be hard to remember which breast you left off on. With my first baby ,I would write it down each time on notebook paper and that was miserable. They also make bracelets to help you remember. But I loved this bra clips.

Breastfeeding Bra

Now I can’t tell you I have found the most amazing nursing bra because I always end up getting the cheap ones with good reviews off of Amazon. They work good but of course, after they have been washed a million times they kinda don’t look the best anymore. Not sure if I should buy new ones more often or find this great brand. Sorry, I am lazy and too occupied with other things so my bra is the last thing on my list. If you know of a great breastfeeding bra please let me know.

I have also bought them from Wal-Mart and Target.

Nipple cream

The first couple of weeks of breastfeeding there is a very good chance your nipples will be cracked and chapped. Nipple cream is great for this. Also breast milk – you will learn breast milk is actually great for a lot of things.

Breast pads

Maybe not everyone’s boobs leak but there is a great chance yours will for at least a couple of months (almost a year for me) so stock up on breast pads. I use the disposable ones.

Thereapearl 3-in-1 breast therapy

Which is made by Lansinoh. Which I am sure there are other brands but this is the only one I have used. Or you could also make some sort of homemade one if you don’t want to buy one. But in the beginning stages of breastfeeding when your breasts are adjusting to how much milk you baby needs they can be very full and painful. The Thereapearl can be frozen or heated and placed inside of your bra for relief. They are honestly great.

Prenatal

Yep – you will continue to take your prenatal vitamins. Just think… your baby is eating from your body just like when they were in your tummy. It is important that you are getting the vitamins you need.

Nursing clothes

Now I do not mean $100 clothes for actual “nursing clothes” because they can be very expensive. Now if that is what you want to buy then go ahead. But I would rather spend my money on cheaper clothes that are “boob accessible” and still wear the clothes long after I have quit breastfeeding.

That is how I prefer to do things. You can try both – there are some cheaper breastfeeding clothes – and see what works best for you.

Snacks

Well because you’re just really hungry when you’re breastfeeding and snacks are always a great idea.

Water bottle

It is so important to make sure you are drinking plenty of water while breastfeeding. What helps me do this is having a water bottle that I love to use… which is one with a straw. I just drink water out of them quicker and since it holds 32oz it holds plenty of water.

Breastfeeding cover

You do not have to cover but some feel more comfortable doing so especially in certain company. I am all for breastfeeding however you want! Whether it is uncovered with your boob out or using a certain cover to help you feel more comfortable. It is about finding what works for you and your baby.

Everyone’s breastfeeding journey is different and what you find useful may not be useful to others. And we all know all that we really need is our breasts and our baby (like the olden days). But thankfully people have created products to make our breastfeeding journeys a lot simpler and I am sure that is what we all want. At least I know I did.

A lot of times it is helpful to know there are certain products out their to help us so even if we think we may not need it at first we could eventually need the product.
